TEXAS ANNOUNCES SWEEPING CHANGES TO CONTROVERSIAL CSCOPE EDUCATION PROGRAM

Feb. 8, 2013 6:15pm  from TheBlaze

Score a big win for parents’ rights. On Friday, the state of Texas announced that they had reached an agreement with the Texas Education Service Center Curriculum (TESCCC) that would bring sweeping changes to the very secretive curriculum management system known as CSCOPE.

Texas Announces Sweeping Changes To States Controversial CSCOPE Education Program

Back in November of 2012, and based on complaints from parents, teachers, and students,TheBlaze started covering the story about an internal takeover of the Texas Public School education system. According to parents and teachers that we spoke with, the CSCOPE system was causing problems on several levels.

Transparency – Parents were not allowed to review the lessons that being taught in school. CSCOPE’s parents’ portal was a very basic outline and contained only sketchy details. Any parent who requested access to the lesson plans was told that they needed to visit the actual school and be directed by a teacher to see the online lessons.

Oppressive and Threatening Conditions – Teachers complained that working under the strict guidelines of the CSCOPE program, they were expected to deliver the content verbatim and only on the scheduled days in the lesson plan. If some students were not grasping the lesson, the teachers were directed to move on to the next lesson. Uniformity and sticking to the calendar were stressed over actual learning. Teachers were also asked to sign a contract that would prevent them from revealing what was in the CSCOPE lessons or face civil and criminal penalties.

Lack of State Board of Education Oversight – The Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) was virtually shut out of the decision making on CSCOPE.

The agreement announced Friday contains several very important points and makes changes to the system immediately.  One of the most popular concessions will make many educators happy – Teachers will no longer be required to execute the CSCOPE lessons verbatim.

There were other significant changes to the program

From the Cypress Creek Mirror in Texas:

  • All future meetings of the TESCCC Governing Board, beginning with the February meeting, will be public with all the respective notice requirements being met.
  • The TESCCC will begin a joint review process of all CSCOPE lessons with the SBOE beginning with Social Studies.
  • Amendment of all Terms of Use Agreements, signed by both teachers and districts, removing civil or criminal penalties associated with the release of CSCOPE content.
  • Clarifying that all teachers and districts may post any and all CSCOPE lessons that they deem necessary.

The introduction of transparency and the removal of the threats against teachers who exposed CSCOPE were two of the key arguments made by those hoping to slow CSCOPE’s growth. But the agreement actually went further than many people expected. The massive changes also include:

  • Ending the non-profit 501(c)3 arrangement that incorporates CSCOPE.
  • Initiating the posting of CSCOPE lesson content to their public website.
  • Creating a standing curriculum review panel, comprised of: parents, teachers, school administrators, members of the SBOE, and TESCCC board members.

Texas State Senator Dan Patrick was vital to the negotiation between the SBOE and CSCOPE. Mr. Patrick’s statement on the agreement expressed his satisfaction with it, but also issued a little warning to CSCOPE:

“I’m glad the CSCOPE Board realizes that immediate and long term changes must be made to address the serious issues raised by our committee, parents, and teachers. Our committee will be monitoring the situation closely to ensure they follow through with their commitments. We will also be looking at legislation to ensure these changes cannot be reversed in the future and that the SBOE continues in their role of oversight of CSCOPE content. The future of the program will depend on CSCOPE keeping the commitments they have made and gaining the trust of the legislature, teachers, and parents.”

If you are not aware of what CSCOPE  is or was doing, the organization is an offshoot of an educational program that traces its roots back to 1965 when the state established media centers / Education Service Centers (ESCs) throughout each of Texas’s 20 school districts. In recent years, these ESCs have been transformed into a non-profit group that created the curriculum management system known as CSCOPE.

To get a better understanding of how CSCOPE was pushing some controversial concepts into the schools, we suggest you review these Blaze articles:

States Rejecting Common Core Standards – Will Salem-Keizer School Board Follow Suit?

Georgia: State school chief will dive into Cobb’s Common Core debate

State Schools Superintendent John Barge is coming to Cobb County on Saturday to address concerns about the controversial Common Core standards.

The announcement of Barge’s visit to Cobb comes on the heels of a 4-3 vote by the Cobb Board of Education last week to reject the purchase of $7.5 million in math textbooks aligned with Common Core. This rejection at the local level came after the state had already committed to implementing the nationwide standards under the past two governors, Sonny Perdue and Nathan Deal, even though the Legislature has never voted on the issue.

That Barge would come to Cobb to face what is likely to be a room full of fellow Republicans with deep-seated suspicions about a federal program is a sign that worry is building in Atlanta about the possibility of a grassroots revolt against Common Core.

Barge is scheduled to address the Cobb Republican Party Breakfast at 8:15 a.m. Saturday at the GOP’s Roswell Street headquarters.

Meanwhile, Republican office-holders in Cobb, along with those hoping to be elected to offices here, continue to line up against Common Core.

Here is SKSD’s response to a question about Common Core Standards in SKSD:

With the adoption of Common Core State Standards, we have an unprecedented opportunity to access instructional materials and innovative practices on a national level. Many of these resources are open source, meaning anyone can access the materials.

The primary responsibility of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment program assistants is to take current and innovative research and practices from the field and determine how well it aligns to and supports instruction of Common Core State Standards and promotes college and career readiness in our district. The program assistants also participate in the national and state committees for Smarter Balance, Achieve, Next Generation, South Metro to Salem STEM Hub and national language arts consortium where they are able to provide input to the development of national and state instructional and assessment materials as well learn about innovations relative to CCSS.

We currently are working with both Stanford University and University of Colorado Boulder on development and implementation of instructional practices and materials for K-12 ELL students.

Additionally, the district applies for US Department of Education grants to support expansion through pilots of innovative practices developed by teachers in the field.

Top 10 Ways to get Slandered by the Left

by Joe Wurzelbacher on Apr 29, 2013 | Joe The Plumber

imagesSociopaths very rarely have cohesive thoughts which can be used in debate or discussion. They simply attack you if you disagree with them. It’s kind of their deal, and forms the core of why people tend to steer clear of, make no eye contact with, or interact with insane or unstable individuals. Most of these poor souls don’t know they’re lacking in the critical thinking department and often react viscerally and intimidatingly, or even physically as a conflict resolution.

Which brings me to the contemporary Liberal: They attack you if you disagree with them as well, but there’s a distinct difference in most cases. They know a reasoned discussion will result in their position being exposed as myopic, loaded with unintended consequences, or even insane when the “repeating the same behavior and expecting different results” adage is applied. I say “most cases” because Liberals are known to use extreme intimidation, threats and even physical violence as conflict resolution as well.

I’m not going to bore you with examples, but Google the names, Kenneth Gladney, Allee Bautsch or Congressman Bob Etheridge for fodder. If that doesn’t get your blood running, try Christopher Dorner, Shawn R. Christy, or Theodore Kaczynski if you need your Liberals a little more extreme.

code_pink_murderLiberals are paranoid, deceitful, insecure, vile, and delusional for sure, but the problem now is the sheer number of them in leadership positions in politics, the media and academia. While the rest of us were busy working hard, raising families, and generally just kicking ass, Liberals were slithering their way into power. The result is political correctness now being wielded like a sword against reasoned thought, and a scary growth of collectivism in America. When conservatives see policies put into place that are not working, the left attacks us personally. Let’s put the Left vs. the Right in proper context:

1) We see our immigration policy doesn’t work, you call us racist

2) We see America is over regulated; you say we want dirty air and water

3) We see the welfare system perpetuates misery, and you say we hate the poor

4) We see gay marriage as hurting the family, you call us homophobes

5) We see Al Gore getting rich off a hoax, you say we hate science.

6) We believe in all the Bill of Rights, you call us violent extremists

7) We believe American culture is exceptional; you say we’re imperialist

8) We believe in personal responsibility, you say we’re cruel

9) We want to protect unborn babies; you say we want a War on Women

10) We believe in God and liberty, you use a gay slur and call us teabaggers

When confronted with the facts or even doubt, Liberals will vilify or assault anyone they consider to be an adversary. Their opponents are not just someone who disagrees – they are the enemy who needs to be destroyed personally, professionally and even physically. Conservatives attack the issues, you attack us. You belittle, you use hate, you fear monger, you go after our kids and families without regard or remorse. It is a strategy outlined very plainly in a number of publications, with three of them standing out as primers for today’s American Left: Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals, the Cloward-Piven strategy blueprint, and the Communist Manifesto.

Google them.

Public Education Is Costing Us Billions

We all see it.

More money being spent, more money being asked for in bond measures, and more money taken with taxes.

Massive federal mandates are being imposed on our local schools because school districts accepted federal money with little or no time to understand what strings are attached.

Example of a Common Core worksheet - coming soon to your child's school?

Example of a Common Core worksheet – coming soon to your child’s school?

And boy oh boy, are there strings attached!

School districts across the country were coerced with waivers for No Child Left Behind and federal Race to the Top grants from stimulus money that are dictating adherence to Common Core State Standards. These standards will:

  • Mandate nationalized testing
  • Implement data tracking that is a flagrant violation of privacy
  • Impose one-size-fits-all benchmarks that will drive classroom curriculum
  • Require an official observer to be present in the classroom
  • Discourage parental participation in their child’s education

As a School Board Director, I will ask questions, dig deep, and listen to the needs of Salem-Keizer students, parents, teachers, and staff. I will demand answers from the status quo that is all to often just a rubber stamp. I am running for school board because I believe that Salem-Keizer schools need balanced, sensible leadership.

If you agree, please write-in Denise Quinn Nanke for Zone 3 on your May ballot.

Lynch Mob?

According to this news story, professors at the University of Buffalo compared pro-life students to a lynch mob and tried to shut them down.  Of course, it was one of the professors who was actually arrested for behaving in a lynch mob manner.

The school district had a similar reaction to us when we protested Planned Parenthood’s involvement in our schools.  While we were not the subject of profanity-laced tirades, the following meeting had a large number of security guards present as if we were some sort of threat to their safety.  But we were no such thing.  We are pro-life.  We respect others, even when they don’t respect us.

At Buffalo University, pro-abortion professors and others objected to the graphic depiction of abortion present on the posters.  If they are in favor of abortion, you would think they would be proud to have those pictures displayed.  But they are not.

In Salem-Keizer School District, a grandmother read from a Planned Parenthood website.  You would think that if they were in favor of Planned Parenthood in our schools, they would be proud to hear those words.  But they weren’t.  They asked the grandmother to stop reading from the text of the website.  I think it was called “Take Care Down There”.  Anyway, like the professor at Buffalo University who was arrested for harassing pro-life students, they are in favor of something they are not really proud of.  They don’t want it shown.  They tried to hide Planned Parenthood’s involvement, and downplayed what Planned Parenthood does.  We think its better to be in favor of something that we are proud of.

There are two candidates for the school board who are in favor of getting rid of Planned Parenthood.  Gayle Strawn is on the ballot, and Denise Quinn-Nanke is a write-in candidate.  Support them with your votes.  Just as important, support them by spreading the news on social media and telling your friends.  Like them on Facebook.  Forward e-mails.  We need everyone to know about Planned Parenthood’s involvement in our schools, and that there are two candidates who aim to stop it.

Salem, Oregon: Statesman Journal Newspaper SILENT on Gosnell Murder Trial

UPDATE: I’ve been running this search every day and the Statesman Journal is STILL SILENT as of today.

Twitter has been blazing with the #Gosnell awareness campaign, which is bringing attention to the hideous crimes of Dr. Kermit Gosnell in Philadelphia, PA. I was browsing articles on Twitchy and came across this piece on the deafening lack of coverage at the venerable New York Times. I decided to head on over to the Statesman Journal webpage and do a little search of my own.

Here’s what my search for “Gosnell” yielded today (April 14, 2013)

SJ Gosnell Search

Screen shot of search page at StatesmanJournal.com taken Sunday, April 14, 2013 at 1:00 pm

Now some may ask “why would a newspaper in Salem, Oregon cover a murder trial in Pennsylvania?” That’s a good question however, the Statesman Journal is the only major newspaper published in the capital city, it is owned by Gannett,  and it links to USA Today as it’s source for national news. So, perhaps the more troubling question is why didn’t my search yield any results from their national news affiliate?

All news starts out as “regional news”, but some events are so shocking that they transcend that status quickly and make the leap into national news. The Newtown school massacre, the Aurora theater massacre, and Super-storm Sandy were all regional tragedies that demanded national attention. The heinous crimes of Kermit Gosnell – and his murder trial – also have national significance and the massive amount of  social media attention reflects that.

There are people in communities across the country who rely on their local newspapers to give them the news: local, state-wide, and national. Given that these papers are part of a larger food chain of information, my search query should have brought up some results.

Fighting Planned Parenthood in Salem-Keizer Public Schools. What You Can Do

We must act now to prevent Planned Parenthood from becoming more firmly entrenched in our school system.  We must not have the nation’s largest promoter of promiscuity and teen age sex, and the nation’s largest abortion provider presented to our children as an educator, a community service organization, and a resource to meet their needs.  Our children must be aware of this organization’s true nature, not have them presented as just another “agency” in our schools.  Planned Parenthood must not be given access to our children in any form.  In some school districts, they have even run clinics in the schools.  We can’t let that happen here.

We are asking that the word be spread about what is going on.  Post Salemschoolwatch.com on your Facebook page.  E-mail your friends.  Talk to your pastor.  People need to be made aware of what is going on.

We would like every parent, every taxpayer, every community member to contact the school board and the superintendent to voice their opposition to Planned Parenthood’s presence in our schools.

We need people to show up at school board meetings.

Everyone should remain polite, but firm and insistent in communication with the district.  We can’t take “no” for an answer.

Make it a special point to contact the Superintendent, the Chairperson of the School Board, and the Vice Chair Person of the school board, listed below.

Periodically check the website, salemschoolwatch.com for updates and information.

Don’t wait for “permission” to act.  If you feel called to do something, then do it.  But do keep in touch so we remain effective and aren’t duplicating efforts, or if you want to discuss an idea with someone.

What You Can Do.

It’s Abortion Party Time!

repro-rights-pop-culture-web

Published on April 13, 2013 at Oregon Oracle

On April 3, I challenged Oregon Republican legislators to stand up to Democrats and the Oregon abortion industry and not be bullied by the threat of facing a floor vote on HCR 6, which celebrates Oregon as the state with the fewest restrictions on the barbaric practice known as abortion. In these last ten days, something has happened that should bolster the collective spines of the GOP in Salem. Thanks to relentless reporting by conservative, non-mainstream media, the murder trial of abortionist Kermit Gosnell in Philadelphia has finally given America and the rest of the world a gruesome, firsthand look inside an abortion slaughterhouse.

Meanwhile, in Salem, some GOP leaders are quietly hoping Democrat leadership does not bring HCR 6 to the floor, forcing a debate and uncomfortable vote on a keystone plank of the Democratic Party’s platform. To the contrary, there has never been a better time to open the doors to the abortion mills for everyone to see what occurs during this “medical procedure.” Democrats continue their party line that abortions must be kept “legal and safe.” Safe for whom? Babies who are effectively if not literally decapitated while screaming? And what is the response by Oregon’s NARAL and Planned Parenthood chapters to abortion’s dirtiest secrets being revealed? Well, they’re having a fundraiser and abortion comedy show.

Doctor Gosnell: The Cold Reality of Abortion

by Ben Nanke, Generation the Great

Now I want to preface this story with a little bit of information about me. I am not one of those people you will see out on Facebook posting pictures of fetuses. I’m not the guy who pickets abortion clinics or makes the abortion debate his #1 issue. But what I am is a person who would never abort a child, because it’s a child. I believe that a human life is such a complex thing, and it shouldn’t be destroyed on a whim, at any stage of life.

I find this case barbaric. Just skimming the Grand Jury Report made me nauseous.  This case is drawing out anger and disgust against the abortionist Doctor Kermit Gosnell, from those who are pro-life and pro-choice. The question I ask is… why? Why this specific case? Bear with me.

News has been coming out that this abortion clinic was absolutely a house of horrors. Slate.com is reporting on this, and shared a segment from the Grand Jury Report in their article. I appreciate that, because the temptation is to glaze over the details. This kind of thing needs to be heard though. I want to warn you right now: this is disturbing.

Furniture and blankets were stained with blood. Instruments were not properly sterilized. Disposable medical supplies were not disposed of; they were reused, over and over again. Medical equipment – such as the defibrillator, the EKG, the pulse oximeter, the blood pressure cuff – was generally broken; even when it worked, it wasn’t used. The emergency exit was padlocked shut. And scattered throughout, in cabinets, in the basement, in a freezer, in jars and bags and plastic jugs, were fetal remains. It was a baby charnel house.
